In a comprehensive post on X, Buterin elaborated that the funds he donated originated from a large stash of dog-themed tokens, particularly Shiba Inu, which developers had sent to his wallet as a promotional tactic. During the memecoin surge in 2021, these tokens skyrocketed in value, reaching a “book value” of over $1 billion. Suspecting this rally was likely a bubble, Buterin acted quickly to liquidate some of his holdings for Ether and proceed with his donations.

He revealed that approximately half of the remaining SHIB tokens were allocated to help India's COVID-19 relief efforts through the organization CryptoRelief, while the other half went to the Future of Life Institute, which focuses on existential threats like artificial intelligence, nuclear risks, and biotechnology.

Initially, Buterin expected that the institute would only be able to convert between $10 million and $25 million worth of tokens due to market liquidity constraints. To his surprise, both the Future of Life Institute and CryptoRelief successfully converted about $500 million worth of SHIB tokens.
